IVANO-FRANKIVSK REGION. ZONE OF EXTERNAL CARPATHIANS THRUST ONTO FORE-CARPATHIAN TROUGH.
GEOLOGICAL LANDMARKS OF UKRAINE. IVANO-FRANKIVSK REGION.
External Carpathians, Skyboviy Nappe, Fore-Carpathian Trough, Boryslavsko-Pokutskiy Nappe Nadvirna area, south-western outskirt of Delyatyn village
Right gullied bank of Prut River
48° 30′ N lat; 24°37′ E long.
Square 1,5 hectares
Tectonic, stratigraphic.
Along the 30 m distance there occur extensively broken black argillites of Oligocene Menilite Suite (30-35 Ma) which are thrust onto olistostrome rocks of Vorotyshchenska Suite of Eger-Egenburg regio-divisions (25 Ma). The latter rocks have salted clay matrix and contain olistolites of Menilitova Suite rocks. Downstream in the left bank of Prut River in the first over-bed terrace along 200 m distance there expose classical olistostrome section — broken salted gray clays. Then in 2 km downstream close to the church in Zarichchya village in the gullied right river bank along the distance of 350 m there occur Menilitova Suite rocks which form tectonic semi-remnant of Skyboviy Nappe displaying very flat wave-shaping surface of the main Carpathian thrust onto Fore-Carpathian Trough. There is gullied slope up to 10 m high along the distance of 50 m and outcrops in terrace and in the river course.
This outcrop where very clearly is observed the zone of regional thrust of Skyboviy Nappe over Lower Miocene rocks of Boryslavsko-Pokutskiy Nappe, is an excellent example of the thrust nature of two major tectonic zones and characteristic olistostrome rocks of Lower Miocene molassa.
Ecological conditions are suitable. The outcrops are best visible after flood at lower water level.
Access by motor-car road along left bank then by bridge at Peremyska Stream to opposite bank of Prut River, or by right bank cross Zarichchya village by dirt road to north-western village outskirt 0.8 km down Peremyska Stream.
Legally the object as geological landmark is not defined yet. It is suggested to give the status of regional-rank landmark.
