GEOLOGICAL LANDMARKS OF UKRAINE. IVANO-FRANKIVSK REGION.

Fore-Carpathian Trough, Boryslavsko-Pokutskiy and Sambir Nappes

Nadvirna area, centre of Lanchyn village. Left bank of Prut River

48° 33′ N lat; 24° 45′ Elong.

Square 2,5 hectares

Stratigraphic, tectonic.

On the river left bank along the 30 m distance there outcrops a pile of coarse-clastic rocks with layers of parti-colored clays which are defined as Stebnytska Suite of Otnangskiy and Carpathian regional stages (18-22 Ma). Beneath occurs a zone of broken rocks up to 1.5 m thick which accompanies the thrust of Boryslav-Pokutskiy Nappe onto the Sambirskiy Nappe. Downstream in both river banks there occur Olistostrome rocks of Balytska Suite of Carpathian-Badenian regiodivisions (14-18 Ma) which belong to Sambirskiy Nappe. Olistostrome matrix is composed of salted clays enriched with Stebnytska Suite olistolites and olistoplackes. Outcrops in both river banks occur in the first over-bed terrace along 200 m distance.

This is the only place in Fore-Carpathians where in the natural outcrop one can observe the over-thrust of two large nappes which make the internal part of the trough. Besides, this provides olistostrome rock section within Sambirskiy Nappe.

Ecological conditions are suitable. Best visible after flood.

Access by II-class motor-car road Delyatyn-Kolomiya to the church in Lanchyn village then 350 m to the bridge over river.

Legally the object as geological landmark is not defined yet.

It is suggested to give the status of geological regional-rank landmark.
