Volodymyr Снірак, chief of Transcarpathian Water Management

Transcarpathia is one of the most flood risk regions of Europe. Here is always a potential threat of disastrous floods origin. There were 6 floods in the 19th century and 17 – in the 20th. On the rivers of Transcarpathia this disaster was observed in 1882, 1887, 1902, 1912, 1925, 1941, 1947, 1970, 1980, 1992, 1998, 2001 and 2008. The floods are accompanied by geological processes activation – landslips, mudflows, water erosion strengthening. The reason of floods in Transcarpathia is the combination of natural and anthropogenic factors.

“The scheme of complex flood control of the Tysa river basin in the Transcarpathian region” and the corresponding “Program of complex flood control of the Tysa river basin” were developed by the State water management. World experience of flood control shows that the traditional method of dike protection is not always effective. The traditional flood control facilities should be utillized in combination with flood flow adjusting. The essence of flood adjusting consists in the accumulation of the highest peak of flood into the special flood control reservoirs (polders) and drawdown of its volume on flood recession.
