Transcarpathia

Distance from Uzhhorod to Kyiv: by rail – 798 km, by motorway – 788 km

Geographical data: the region is located in moderately continental climatic area; there are rivers on the territory of the region – 9,5 thousands of streams and rivers the largest are Tysa, Latorytsya, Borzhava

Borders:

The region borders on 2 regions of Ukraine and 4 countries of Europe

The number of inhabitants by 01.07.2010: 1242,7 thousands – 2,7 % of the population of Ukraine, rural population – 785,1 thousands, urban population – 457,6 thousands.

The amount of administrative-territorial units: amount of districts 13, amount of the towns of regional subordinance 5, amount of the towns of district subordinance 6, amount of urban settlements 19, amount of villages 579.

Mountains make most of the territory of the land (Hoverla – the highest peak of 2061 m, Brebeneskul – 2035 m, Pip-Ivan – 2022 m, Petros – 2020 m, Hutyn-Temnatyk – 2017 m). The Carpathian mountains are 1,2 milliard years old. According to the World Foundation of Nature the Carpathian mountains are among the YUNESKO international network reserves and are one of the two hundred most important ecological regions of the world.

The large areas of hard-leaved pine woods are the greatest treasure of the region. Hornbeam-oak forests, beech-oak forests, beech and pine forests prevail. The largest in Europe areas of virgin forests, unique species of the flora and fauna alpine belt are preserved in Ukrainian Carpathians.

For the balneological resources variety and availability Transcarpathia stands ahead of the other regions of Ukraine. They equal chemically the famous waters of Caucasus, Czech Republic, France. Mineral water springs count over 360 in the region. Thirty types of mineral waters have been discovered till nowadays. According to their qualities four fields are of Yesentuka type and six more of Borzhomi and Arzni types.

Something Special About Transcarpathia

The geographic centre of continental Europe is situated near the village of Dilove, Rakhiv district. Today there is a museum with the same name of “Goegraphic centre of Europe. Museum-shanty”. The highest mountain of Ukraine is Hoverla. It is 2061 m high.

The largest mountain lake of Ukraine is Lake Synevyr. It covers an area of 70 cubic meters and it is located at the height of 989 m.

The highest mountain town of Ukraine is Rakhiv. It is located on 820 m over sea level.

The deepest treatment station of Ukraine is situated in Solotvyno. The allergy treatment clinic is located in salt caves at a depth of 300 m.

The largest musical instrument of Ukraine is Huzul wooden trembita (4 m long).

The most ancient man on the territory of Ukraine and Central Europe appeared 1 million years ago near the village of Korolevo, Vynohradovo district.

The unique wooden churches built by the folk masters without a single nail are the pride of Transcarpathia.

The most completed fortification buildings are 11 -17 century castles. There are 12 medieval castles in Transcarpathia.
