GEOLOGICAL LANDMARKS OF UKRAINE. IVANO-FRANKIVSK REGION.

Fore-Carpathian Trough, Bilche-Volytska Zone

Kolomiya area, Pistyn village. Pistynka River, right slope of river valley

48° 22 N lat.; 25° 02 E long.

Square 0,5 hectare.

Stratigraphic.

There is outcrop in gullied slope of river valley. Conglomerates, with inter-layers of weakly-cemented sandstones, mainly consist of the rock fragments that represent Carpathian and partly Fore-Carpathian section. This is typical fan of Pra-Pistynka River that had existed here 13 Ma ago. In the fragment material there were found minute granitoid pebbles which source is still unknown for the region researchers. Conglomerates occur in front of Sambir Thrust in almost vertical dipping. But downstream the river valley over 1 km distance rock dipping gradually flattens up to horizontal.

This is stratotype object for Late Badenian coarse-clast rocks which in publications are known as “Pistyn conglomerates”.

Ecological conditions are suitable.

From Kolomiya Town there is motor way to Pistyn village and then from the bridge 1 km by walk pass along right bank of Pistynka River.

Legally the object as geological landmark is not defined yet. It is suggested to give the status of local-rank landmark.
